Before you read the poem, read the box on page 663 to understand the background information.

This poem is all about mood. It is meant to be performed and read out loud, which is what we will do as a class. You will be split into two groups. First, read the poem aloud at least twice to get a flow for it. Identify characters within the poem and decide who will portray those characters (whether they speak or not).

Next, analyze the words and content. You need to figure out how you would say or act while particular words are being heard. Look at the list of words below. Copy and paste them on a word document or write them down in your notebook. Next to each word, explain how you would say it or what you would do to act it out. The first one is done for you as a sample. Remember, you won't find these words in the dictionary because they're invented by him.

slithy - almost sounds like slimy. I would pronounce it with a long "I" sound and draw that out to give a creepy sound to it.

Third, decide on movements to enhance words.

Now put it all together. Will you speak in unison? Will there be a narrator? How will your group enhance the words with your voices, facial expressions, and movements?
